How to use these lists

Second Year vocabulary is often partly familiar, which makes selective attention especially important. A student may know the English meaning of a verb while overlooking a construction note that determines the next clause. This index lets you revisit the whole entry by lesson: meaning, forms and the information needed to connect it to neighbouring words. Use it beside the assigned reading, not as a replacement for the text's explanations or a complete glossary of every form in a passage.

The early lists review noun and adjective patterns, direct questions, pronouns and verb systems. Later groups bring together verbs taking particular cases, deponents, irregular compounds and expressions followed by infinitives. Learn a case requirement as part of the relationship the verb expresses. A dative person after a command or an ablative after a deponent will not always resemble the English construction. When a translation seems plausible but the cases do not fit, return to that relationship rather than smoothing the English further.

Connected narrative also needs continuity. Track who acts, where people move and whose statement is being reported. Small words can supply the decisive clue: a temporal conjunction orders events, a negative changes a purpose, and a comparative modifies what one group can do more easily than another. Try a brief outline of the action before writing a polished translation. If the outline breaks, check the connectors and pronoun references as well as the unfamiliar nouns. The vocabulary notes point to distinctions that can be tested in this way.

Challenge II families can use their level page's week table to find the mapped lists. Some lessons repeat over more than one week; other vocabulary-bearing lessons are not assigned a week in the reference schedule. This complete year index keeps those lists accessible. It also serves students following a school, tutor or independent course with different pacing. A missing list number indicates no separate vocabulary entries in this reference, not a decision about whether the textbook's lesson should be studied. Your current course materials settle that question.

To prepare for discussion, bring a sentence you have attempted and explain the point where the reading became uncertain. Show whether the obstacle was a word meaning, a principal part, a case or a dependent clause. A parent can help organise that question without supplying an advanced translation. For review, choose the forms that actually slowed the week's reading and mix them with the new entries. The goal is recognition that survives a changed context, allowing the student to follow the narrative with increasing confidence and less repeated searching.

In Classical Conversations, Henle Second Year is the Latin text for Challenge II.

Questions families ask

Which vocabulary supports Henle Second Year reading?

The lessons below contain the Second Year entries in this reference. Use them with the textbook glossary for words beyond the listed lesson vocabulary.

Why are Year 2 lessons 21, 28 and 30 absent here?

Those lesson numbers have no separate entries in this reference. The book may still assign grammar or reading under those numbers.

How can I practise Caesar vocabulary without memorising a translation?

Recall the full word entry, then identify its form and role in the Latin passage. Explain the event from those clues before polishing English.

Why do Latin verbs need case notes?

Their construction can differ from English. The case note tells you how a person or thing relates to the action and can prevent a plausible but incorrect reading.

Where is the Challenge II weekly vocabulary schedule?

Open the Challenge II vocabulary page from the hub. Its table links the mapped Second Year lessons; this index includes the remaining lists too.

Should I skip a repeated Year 1 word in Year 2?

Check its construction and range of meanings first. A familiar headword may return to support a new grammatical relationship.
